FAQ’s

What is a fringe festival?

Fringe theatre is theatre that is produced outside of the main theatre institutions, and that is often small-scale and non-traditional in style or subject matter. The term comes from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In London, the fringe are small-scale theatres, many of them located above pubs, and the equivalent to New York's Off Broadway theatres and Europe's "free theatre" groups.

In unjuried theatre festivals, also known as fringe festivals or open-access festivals, all submissions are accepted, and sometimes the participating acts may be chosen by lottery, in contrast to juried festivals in which acts are selected based on their artistic qualities. Unjuried festivals (such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edmonton Fringe Festival, Adelaide Fringe, and Fringe World) permit artists to perform a wide variety of works.

As part of the Newport Fringe Festival we are sharing new works of the performing arts, this means that the work you will see is in its early stages of development, it isn't full length, it may require feedback from the audiences and it may not include all the normal things that you would expect from a main house, fully fledged production.

How and Where can I collect my wristband?

All wristbands are available to collect from The Place 9-10 Bridge Street ahead of the festival during opening hours. Tues & Thursday 3 - 8pm, Friday and Saturday 11-5pm

Can I buy my tickets on the weekend of the festival?
Yes. Wristbands can be purchased from The Place on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd 11 - 5pm.

Can I buy wristbands on the door at the venues?
No. All tickets must be purchased online and exchanged for a wristband.

Do my children need a wristband?

No. Up to 2 children or young people can enter a venue alongside 2 adults with wristbands. Children and Young people can enter all events for free but please check the age appropriation on the programme listings as those considered underage will be refused entry.

Are the venues suitable for Buggies and wheelchairs?

All venues have accessible features for those with prams, walking aids and Wheelchair users. However parents may want to consider alternative options to carry their babies where possible, should the event only have standing or small capacity.

Can I just get one ticket for one show?
The only separate listed and ticketed event outside of the weekend pass is Hummdruz on Saturday 22nd at the Corn Exchange (Link) All other events require a weekend pass to enter.

What if I only want to see one performance in the programme?

We have intentionally kept the cost of wristbands below the considered average for a theatre performance. Therefore we would hope that it is considered great value for money and a donation towards all the artists participating.

Are there any free to access shows?
During the weekend there will be roaming street theatre performances in the city centre. This will be free to see and do not require wristbands. These will be unscheduled performances.

Where does the cost of the wristbands go?

The cost made from the ticket sales for the festival is directly reinvested into the festival and artists, volunteers and production team making it happen. There are no big corporations or funders involved.

Who is being paid?

The core company of Tin Shed and collaborating Venues are paid by their own organisations. As part of the festival, Tin Shed’s 5 artists in residence will be sharing their work; these artists have been paid to develop their pieces over 2 weeks ahead of the Fringe. Aside from this, all front of house staff and performing artists are performing for free and have developed their work outside of the festival.

What happens if I lose my wristband?

Please come to The Place with proof of purchase between 11-5pm Friday & Saturday 11-5pm and we will issue you a replacement.

Is there any information for people with access requirements?

Yes, please contact apply@tinshedtheatrecompany.com & we can directly deal with your request.
