TST - Moby Dick - SHOW LOGO.png

Moby Dick tells the story of Ishmael, a young man desperate to leave land and see the watery part of the world. Meeting with a host of other lost souls, the story quickly becomes about friendship, male mental health, and the need for human companionship. However, Ishmael’s journey across the ocean in search of a great white whale soon becomes a voyage of the damned, as fate tests his religion, and the captain’s madness tests his resolve.

Experience the highs and lows of this classic tale re-imagined for a 21st Century Newport audience, as Tin Shed Theatre Co. re tell Moby Dick bravely, and in epic detail, staged on the floating gondola of the Newport Transporter Bridge and performed by local professional and non-professional performers.

Tin Shed Theatre Co. pride themselves in consistently re-inventing the ways in which stories can be told, always seeking to create theatre in unusual places, for non-traditional audiences. Placing themselves in the heart of Pillgwenlly, they’re working with residents and local professional performers to tackle this production with skill and passion. Honouring the history of the bridge by allowing it to influence the work, Moby Dick has been a project built from the ground up with; community, heritage and the unifying principles of theatre at it’s core.

__________

Mae Moby Dick yn adrodd hanes Ishmael, gŵr ifanc sydd ar dân i adael y tir a gweld dyfroedd y ddaear. Gan gyfarfod â chriw o eneidiau coll, dyma gychwyn ar daith ar draws y moroedd yn chwilio am forfil gwyn mawr. Ond mewn dim o dro, mae pethau’n mynd o chwith, wrth i ffawd herio’i grefydd, ac wrth i wallgofrwydd y capten herio’i bwyll. Stori am gyfeillgarwch, am y byd naturiol, am iechyd meddwl dynion, ac am ein hangen am gwmpeini pobl yw hon.

Dewch i brofi llawenydd a thristwch y stori glasurol a hithau wedi’i chreu o’r newydd ar gyfer cynulleidfa’r unfed ganrif ar hugain yng Nghasnewydd. Bydd y Tin Shed Theatre Co yn adrodd yr hanes yn ddewr, mewn manylder eithriadol, a hynny ar gondola a fydd yn arnofio ar Bont Gludo Casnewydd. Bydd actorion proffesiynol a rhai nad ydyn nhw’n broffesiynol ymhlith y perfformwyr.

Mae’r Tin Shed Theatre Co yn ymfalchïo mewn adrodd straeon mewn ffordd newydd o hyd, gan geisio creu theatr mewn mannau anarferol, a hynny i gynulleidfaoedd nad ydyn nhw’n rhai traddodiadol. Gan leoli’u hunain yng nghanol Pilgwenlli, byddan nhw’n gweithio gyda thrigolion a pherfformwyr proffesiynol lleol i fynd i’r afael â'r cynhyrchiad hwn gyda medrusrwydd ac angerdd. Gan barchu hanes y bont drwy adael iddi ddylanwadu ar y gwaith, mae Moby Dick yn brosiect sydd wedi'i greu ar lawr gwlad, gyda’r gymuned, treftadaeth a theatr yn greiddiol i bopeth.

"Rydyn ni’n awyddus i ddathlu treftadaeth gyfoethog Casnewydd, gan ddenu pobl o bob cwr i sefyll yn syfrdan ger y Bont Gludo a’i phrofi mewn ffordd gwbl unigryw. Bydd y bont yn cael ei hatgyweirio cyn hir, ac rydyn ni’n teimlo bod y perfformiad hwn yn ffordd anhygoel i roi un hwrê arall iddi, cyn inni gael cyfle ac amser i ddychmygu ei dyfodol a'i photensial o’r newydd.” Georgina Harris – Cyd-gyfarwyddwr, Tin Shed Theatre Co.

ABOUT THE WORK

PREVIOUS R&D's

Tin Shed Theatre Co. in partnership with First Campus have recently been awarded Arts Council Wales and Heritage Lottery funding to create two weeks of outdoor performance in Oct 2018.

This project is the culmination of an extensive 3 year working relationship with Newport City Council that includes two previous research and development phases funded by The Fusion Project and Arts Council Wales.

Basing ourselves heavily in Pillgwenlly, on the Transporter Bridge and in The Pill Millennium Centre, we have been physically exploring the work, looking at creating a new piece of theatre based on the story of Moby Dick.

This work is about reimagining a much-loved piece of heritage and an icon of Newport’s city skyline, whilst repurposing the platform of the gondola as a temporary performance space. We want to tackle the gritty and awesome text of Moby Dick, exploring the work through devising theatre practices, movement, puppetry and performance, whilst exploring the potential of linking a small cast of professional performers with a larger non-professional community cast, to create an inclusive piece of performance that is for anyone who might want it.

We wanted to creating a performance through which we can speak about our city, share our stories, and make a statement of action and participation whilst standing boldly together on the platform of the bridge. Through doing this we want to question the value of heritage, looking at the bridges history whilst exploring it's future, creating a unique celebratory event for the people of Newport, and beyond.

“We want to celebrate Newport’s rich heritage, and bring people from far and wide to stand in awe of the Transporter Bridge whilst experiencing it in a wholly unique way, giving people space and time to reimagine it’s future and explore its potential.”
